Centennial Celebration: Yesterday Today Tomorrow

The Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts has announced the kickoff of its Centennial Celebration: Yesterday Today Tomorrow, a year-long series of cultural and entertainment events to mark the 100th birthday of the society’s home, Turner House, 401 N. Rosemont Ave. Built by East Texas oilman J.P. Blake in 1912 at the then astronomical cost of $50,000, Turner House is a storied landmark in the Winnetka Heights neighborhood of Oak Cliff.

The Centennial Celebration will begin with the first Salon Series of the spring, a performance by Matt Tolentino and His Hot Five Band (Matt is the leader of Singapore Slingers) on Thursday, February 23. The doors of Turner House will open at 7:30 p.m. for an evening of music, wine and heavy hor d’oeuvres. Board Chairman Scott Chase will announce a year-long schedule of special events that will commemorate the 100 years of art, music, architecture and community activities which Turner House has hosted.

The evening will also feature the formation of the Turner House Council of 100, a group of Turner House friends who have pledged donations to Turner House over the next two years for the continued restoration of Turner House and continuation of its arts and culture mission. The levels of giving are:

Founder, $10,000, memorial plaque, media recognition, package of 6 tickets to all Salon Series and Wine and Art events, item to be placed in time capsule

Patron, $5,000, memorial plaque, media recognition, 4 tickets for all events, item for time capsule

Legacy, $2,500, memorial plaque, media recognition, 2 tickets to choice of Salon Series or Wine and Art, item for time capsule

Supporter, $1,000, memorial plaque, media recognition, 2 tickets to choice of Salon Series

During its first century, Turner House served as the private home of the Blake family, as a boarding house during World War II, and as the home of the Oak Cliff Lutheran Church. The Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts, which is in its 85th year, became the new owner and conservator of the house and grounds in 1957. In addition to music and art events, Turner House is a busy venue for weddings, baptisms, birthdays, receptions, book clubs, Movies on the Lawn and numerous other social and community events.

“We are fortunate to have this beautiful home as a reminder of Oak Cliff’s early 20th Century splendor,” said Chase. “We intend for Turner House to continue as a community asset for another century.”

Salon Series Spring 2012

The Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts is pleased to announce our popular Salon Series for Spring 2012. We will sponsor a series of special art events on the 2nd Thursday of the month featuring concerts and lectures on the arts, all scheduled between 7:30 and 9 pm. The events will be held at the historic Turner House, home of the OCSFA, as part of our mission to be a resource for art and architecture.

Turner House is located at 401 N. Rosemont, 75208. The presentations will all take place between 7:30 and 9 pm. Refreshments will be served. Tickets will be $20 for non-members and $15 for OCSFA members and students; series tickets are available at $59 for non-members and $40 for members.

Wine & Art Tickets Purchase

The Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts will hold its annual Wine & Art Fundraiser on Saturday, September 24th. The theme of this year’s fundraiser is Women Artists of the Texas Centennial. Previous exhibits have focused on male artists, despite the fact that women made up over half of the participants in the landmark 1936 Texas Centennial art exhibit.

Patrons will get a chance to enjoy rarely seen images of artwork from this underexposed group of Texas artists such as Coreen Mary Spellman, Florence McClung, May Schow, and Lura Ann Taylor.

Attendees will enjoy live music, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and a variety of fine wines. Tickets will be $50 to attend the event (7PM), and $75 for the event plus the gallery talk (6PM) by Dr. Jack Davis, Professor of Art from the University of North Texas.

Annual Membership Meeting and Dinner

ANNUAL MEETING AT THE OAK CLIFF SOCIETY OF FINE ARTS – JUNE 16, 2011

At its Annual Meeting, the Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts elected its directors and officers for the upcoming year. The meeting was held at the historic Turner House, home of the OCSFA, followed by an Italian dinner served by operatic singing waiters.

The following board members were elected to 3 year terms, 2011 – 2014: Beverly Palmer, Carolyn Dunnigan, Karen Chappell, Kirk Kirksey, Scott Chase, Susan Amason

Joining them are current board members Russ Aikman, Chris Barker, Paula Murphy, Carol Hagler, Linda Holt, Diane Sherman, Susan Amason, Kenda North, and Denis Duncan.

The Board also elected the following Executive Officers for 2011-2012:
Scott Chase – Chair
Diane Sherman – Vice Chair, Membership
Chris Barker – Vice Chair of Events
Russ Aikman – Treasurer
Carol Hagler – Secretary

Russ Aikman 2010-2011 Chair, presented the accomplishments of the Society for the past year and mentioned current challenges including the need to raise funds to complete the rebuilding of the roof. He noted our annual fundraiser, Wine & Art, scheduled for September 24, 2011. Aikman recognized outgoing board members Jan Doherty and Michael Anderson for their dedicated service to Turner House and announced their new positions on the Emeritus Board. Other members of the Emeritus Board are: Jennifer Castro, Gay Addington, Marguerite Domatti, Alfred Martinez, and James Prothro.

Aikman also recognized the Advisory Board, consisting of:
Konrad Shields, David Griffin, Paul Maute, and David Dike.

Works on Paper

We are very excited to present this interactive event in collaboration with Oil & Cotton and The Book Doctor. Shannon Driscoll and Candice McKay will discuss the proper care and restoration of important and heirloom works on paper such as documents, artwork and books. This will be followed by one-on-one consultations with attendees who bring an object from their own collection.

Shannon Driscoll is a book and paper conservator who owns Oil and Cotton, a creative exchange in Oak Cliff. She has worked on preservation projects as diverse as the Wall of Prayer, which was created spontaneously in the aftermath of 9/11, and turn of the century wallpaper in a New England home.

Candice McKay is a book conservator/restorer who owns The Book Doctor in Oak Cliff.

Remember, attendees are encouraged to bring one heirloom from their own collections, such as an antique book, manuscript, document or work of art. Items should be unframed, if possible. Shannon and Candice will give recommendations on how to care for the item and discuss their historical significance. They will also have information on local appraisers and framers.

Fundraising Estate Sale Update

Thanks to our many supporters who donated items for our fundraising estate sale on Saturday, April 30. Several items were so wonderful that we actually snared them for Turner House, particularly oriental area rugs and some furniture. We sold many things, but received more great items than we could move during a 1 day estate sale. At the end of the day, several pieces moved to the new consignment shop in Bishop Arts. If you didn’t make it to Turner House on Saturday, please visit Eclectic Studioz at 239 W. 7th St. They have an art deco dresser, a baker’s rack, and more. Also, 2 antique beds went to IndieGenius. So, the sale continues . . .

A Day of Service at Turner House

Thanks to everyone who helped to make our Volunteer Work Day on Friday, February 18th at Turner House a success! Our volunteers from Mountain View College, Marci Garrott, Alice Atchison, Becky Heiskell, Leonard Garrett, Randy Dunlap, Ella Barton, Jesse Gonzalez, and Weldon Briggs did a fantastic job, led by Heather Marsh. They were enthusiastic, hard-working, and seemed to really enjoy giving back to Turner House. Plus they were a lot of fun! We accomplished A LOT in a single day!
Thanks to Jan Daugherty & Michael Anderson for providing food, cleaning supplies, encouragement, and knowledge about where to focus the efforts of our volunteers. Also helping out from the OCSFA Board were Scott Chase, Linda Holt, and Russ Aikman. A special thanks goes to Barbara Roy who helped to connect Mountain View volunteers to Turner House.

Inside Action Items Completed:
• New lock on back door installed
• New light switch for basement installed
• Small shelving unit assembled and all paint/hardware stuff moved from kitchen island cabinet to basement
• All loose tools removed from stairs
• Kitchen island base cabinets cleaned
• Kitchen pantry cleared out, cleaned and reorganized
• OC Parlor drapes vacuumed (they were filthy)
• Proposed new drapery design temporarily installed and photographed in OC Parlor
• Windows and mirrors cleaned in OC Parlor, entry, Blake Salon (more filth!)
• Loose parquet tiles glued down in entryway & Blake Salon

Outside Action Items Completed:
• Blake Salon windows on South side cleaned, along with brick and siding around them (the new Windex system I bought really works!)
• Weeded all flower beds and put in new mulch on South, East, and North sides
• Trimmed shrubs in front of house, and all around parking lot
• Trimmed small shoots at base of all crepe myrtles
• Pruned tops of crepe myrtles in front yard
• Removed chain link fence in Northwest corner of property, including vines still growing in the fence!
• Removed one of the clothesline poles
• Cleaned the benches at the front entrance

Nicole McWilliams Joins Turner House as Rental Coordinator

Say hello to our Rental Coordinator, Nicole McWilliams. She oversees the rentals here at the Turner House for events like weddings, receptions, parties, and recitals. Nicole lives in Winnetka Heights and has lived in Oak Cliff for ten years. She is an opera singer and is Director of Opera at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Her first encounter with Turner House was as a performer in the Salon Series in 2009. She immediately fell in love with the space and has been involved in various events here ever since. Nicole will be the point of contact for all your rental needs. We are fortunate to have her as part of the team at Turner House. Don’t miss Nicole for her performance of Mexican Bolero songs in the Spring Salon Series on April 14^th
